ASID has announced this year's “Student Design Competition: Touchdown” first prize and honorable mention winners. The competition, which asked students to design solutions for airport travelers who need workspace while on the go, will grant the winner a $2,000 cash prize, plus a trip to Boston, where she will be honored at the yearly awards gala on July 18.
Winner Heemyung Yang of California State University, Long Beach, took top honors for her Touchdown Lounge project, which features a curved relaxation area plus private, comfortable work niches throughout. The design is inspired by dreams and dreamcatchers, with soft colors and curves as predominant design features. “The dreamcatcher concept itself was intriguing, and the manifestation of it was lovely. The organic forms surround the traveler with warmth and calmness,” said Rachelle Schoessler Lynn, ASID national chair. “The floor plan, lighting plan and furnishing selections were well designed, functional, and efficient, yet comfy and program compliant. This project really explored the three-dimensional opportunities of this space.”

Yang and Nestegard
Honorable mention distinction went to Morgan Nestegard of West Virginia University, who designed "The Warehouse," an industrial-inspired design that features reclaimed steel and wood, corrugated metal, custom glass and other materials, with fluid moveable walls. “Sometimes in practice, we can become extremely pragmatic in our approach to designing spaces,” Amy Kwok, senior gesign strategist at Gensler, said. “The moveable walls were an innovative idea and inviting to clients who could adjust the space they were working in to be more collaborative or more solitary as needed.”
The competition’s judges included Kwok, Lynn, and Martha G. Rayle, ASID Past National Chair and Principal of Rayle Associates. Learn more about the students’ work online.
